Google announced Tuesday that it would shut down the Business Messages feature in Google Maps and Search.

This messaging feature “Google My Business Chat” was first launched in 2017. This feature allowed users to chat directly with businesses through their profiles. However, this feature will soon be a thing of the past.

From July 31, companies will no longer be able to receive messages from their Google Business Profile, according to an email that Google sent to several business owners.

“We recognize that this may be difficult news. As we continually improve our tools, we occasionally have to make difficult decisions that could impact the companies and partners we work with,” Google said in a statement on May 28.

Users can no longer quickly chat with businesses on Maps and Search.

The change may negatively impact communications as direct conversations will no longer be available. However, Google assured us that users can still contact companies via phone calls or emails.

Starting July 15, customers will no longer be able to start new chat conversations with Google companies. Those in existing chats will be notified of the feature’s phase-out.

However, Google assured that customers could still find and contact businesses using other means, such as website links, business descriptions and photos shared on the existing business profile.

“It’s important to us that Google remains a helpful partner as you manage your business, and we remain committed to this mission,” Google added.

The reason behind Google’s decision to discontinue Business Messages remains unclear.
