Prescription costs return, but little news for health care in Budget

The return of the $5 prescription charge for most people is the most significant change for New Zealand’s healthcare system in the 2024 Budget.

The coalition government has made good on its election campaign promise to bring back the fee for everyone except community service card holders and their dependents and people over 65.

As was the case last year before the previous government abolished the fee, households that pay for twenty prescriptions in a year will receive a prescription subsidy card that entitles them to free prescriptions for the rest of the year. 14s.

The government estimates that this will result in savings of $269.622 million over the next five years, of which $153.479 million will be used to fund additional medicines, leaving a net savings of $116.143 million over the period.
