The contagious mumps infection has made a comeback in Chennai and Tamil Nadu, but there is nothing to worry about. Cases of mumps have emerged from January and cases have been increasing over the past 2 to 3 months. The Department of Health has put forward that the public should not panic about mumps. According to the doctors, patients with mumps should without any doubt seek medical help.

It was brought to light by Dr. T. Selvavinayagam: DPHPM mumps cases emerged in January and reached 500 cases in the months of March-April. He added that the number of cases has now been reduced to less than 200 and the number of cases will fall further in the coming days.

Medical Director of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital in Nungambakkam, Dr. Janani Shankar, expressed her thoughts. She said there were many mumps cases from March to April and cases decreased in May. It is noteworthy that in this hospital there were at least 100 outpatients and 20 children required hospitalization. She concluded that the government now only has the measles-rubella or MR vaccine in the UIP and not the previous MMR or measles-mumps and rubella vaccine.
