(Reuters) – France coach Didier Deschamps is concerned that a busy season has taken its toll on his players as they prepare for next month’s European Championship.

The World Cup finalists will play friendlies against Luxembourg and Canada early next month before kicking off their Euro 2024 group stage against Austria on June 17.

“There is no such thing as zero risk, even with someone who is in top form. You never know for sure,” Deschamps told reporters on Wednesday as a 25-man French team started their training camp.

“But honestly, I’m not a magician. You can’t change anything with the time available… if we had three weeks to prepare, we could have done things that could have changed things. But we will adapt and optimize .”

France last played in March, when they lost to Germany and defeated Chile in friendlies at home.

“We could all analyze that during this meeting in March, the players experienced more fatigue than normal. This was related to the sequence of matches,” Deschamps said.

“There can be physical fatigue and psychological fatigue… apart from all other aspects, freshness can be a decisive factor.”

One player he wasn’t worried about, however, was his captain Kylian Mbappé.

“Kylian has always been part of a team project. It’s clear he has responsibilities at his club, but he also has responsibilities here, if not more,” said the 55-year-old Deschamps. “I’m not going to pay any more attention to him in that regard.”

Deschamps said France will aim to qualify for the knockout stages by winning their first two Group D matches against Austria and the Netherlands to relieve some pressure ahead of their final group match against Poland.

“I am a positive person and I am driven by the idea that every day that passes brings us closer to a positive response,” he said. “Every effort will be made to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible.”
