The vehicle was damaged after the mama bear jumped in front of it in a Japanese forest

A brown mama bear gave two men driving on a forest road in Japan the fright of their lives after a sudden attack.

According to the Japanese newspaper The Mainichi ShimbunThe attack happened on Sunday, April 28, around 1 p.m. on a road in Hokkaido Prefecture, while the men were trying to pick Allium ochotense, a type of wild onion.

The men reported seeing the brown bear, believed to be a female, and its cub on each side of the road. Newly released dashcam footage shows the men driving down the road as the bear jumps out of the woods and immediately begins running toward their truck.

Within seconds, the bear arrived at the truck’s windshield and hit the windshield wiper. After giving one blow, the wiper dangles from the window.

As the vehicle tries to reverse, the bear takes a few steps back before charging at it again, cracking the windshield.

The video then cuts to a photo of the truck showing additional damage near the front bumper and rear door.

According to NHK Japan, the men were not injured.

What might have caused the bear’s attack, Masami Yamanaka, a special researcher at the Shiretoko Nature Foundation, explained to The Mainichi Shimbun“The car ended up between the parent and cub. Because the car approached before the parent bear could escape with its cub, the bear likely decided it had no choice but to attack.”

Police are calling on residents to take precautions when going into the mountains, NHK Japan reports.
