San Mamés hosts the FIFA delegation

Representatives of the international organization visited the cathedral as part of the preparations for the 2030 World Cup

A FIFA delegation, accompanied by representatives of the Moroccan, Spanish and Portuguese World Cup host committees, visited San Mames on Wednesday as they began preparations for the 2023 edition of the global tournament.

Members of the international organization are currently inspecting several stadiums that want to become a World Cup venue.

The traveling party, made up of representatives from FIFA, the national associations of the three countries and several business groups created for this project, started their visits to Portugal on Monday.

Athletic Club Director Jon Berasategi was the main host for their cathedral tour.

The new stadium, which only a few days ago successfully hosted the UEFA Women’s Champions League final, could take over from the old San Mamés, which hosted the 1982 World Cup group matches between England, France and Czechoslovakia. and Kuwait took place.

The FIFA delegation was led by Nicholas Rozenberg, while María Tato, Jorge Mowinckel and Fernando Sanz, members of the bid’s Executive Committee, attended on behalf of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), together with partners from the Moroccan and Portuguese associations.

Other local representatives also took part in the tour, including: Juan Fernandez Carnicer of the National Sports Council, the President of the Biscay Football Federation José Ignacio Gómez Maradones and the Secretary General of the Basque Football Federation Kepa Allica, together with delegates from the Bilbao City Council , the Provincial Government of Bizkaia and the Basque Government.
