Mercedes emphasizes fair treatment of drivers, despite Hamilton’s reservations

During the Monaco Grand Prix, Hamilton made some comments that attracted attention. He suggested he might not be able to beat his teammate Russell for the rest of the season. He also said that Russell had a new front wing especially for that race.

It later emerged that Hamilton had chosen not to use the new wing as he did not want to risk starting from the pit lane if it were damaged. But his comments raised questions about whether he felt his teammate had an advantage.

However, Mercedes team boss Wolff says there is no cause for concern. He says Mercedes has always treated its drivers fairly. The only time they intervened in a race between teammates was in 2016, at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Wolff thinks it is normal that drivers sometimes have doubts. But he assures that Mercedes is focused on giving both drivers equal support and the best possible cars.

During the Monaco weekend, Hamilton questioned some of the team’s decisions. But Wolff believes this tension is just part of everyone doing their best in difficult situations.

Wolff does not see the fact that Russell has surpassed Hamilton more often this season as a lasting trend. He says there are still many races left and things could change.

Both Hamilton and Russell will have the new Mercedes front wing for the next race in Canada as part of the upgrades that Mercedes is introducing.
