A Michigan judge was recently surprised by a defendant charged with driving with a suspended license after the defendant appeared during his hearing via Zoom — while he was driving.

The now viral incident, which took place on May 15, CBS News According to reports, Ann Arbor Judge Cedric Simpson first met defendant’s public defender Corey Harris before Harris appeared on screen, apparently behind the wheel of a moving vehicle.

“Mr. Harris, are you driving?” Simpson asked the defendant. “Actually, I’m actually coming to my doctor’s office,” Harris replied casually. “Just give me a minute. I’m parking right now.”

After waiting for Harris to park, Judge Simpson was asked by Harris’ public defender for a delay of “possibly up to four weeks if the court would grant it.”

“Okay, so maybe I don’t understand something,” Judge Simpson responded. “This is a driving ban while driving license is suspended (case). And he was just driving, and he doesn’t have a driver’s license.”

Harris’ mouth opened slowly as she realized his colossal mistake, while Judge Simpson appeared bewildered by the defendant’s nerves.

“I don’t even know why he would do that,” Simpson said, bewildered. “So the defendant’s bail is revoked in this case. The defendant is required to turn himself in at the Washington County Jail today at 6 p.m. Failure to turn himself in will result in a warrant without bond.”

Harris then appears to whisper “Oh my God” to himself.

Since the clip went viral, it has received comments from viewers who were just as shocked as Judge Simpson.

“Committing another crime while on the phone with a judge is insane,” one observer wrote inside TNT’s comments section, with another adding: “He must have missed some screws because there’s no way you just said ‘wait a minute’ to a judge.”
