Private Buses: Idle parking facility for private buses in Mudichur will be opened by the end of June | Chennai News

Chennai: Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) will open the idle parking facility for private buses in Mudichur by the end of June. This is expected to ensure smooth operation of buses from Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus (KCBT) in Kilambakkam. However, private bus operators say that while they pay 150 euros as entry fee at KCBT, they will now be forced to pay extra for parking at the new facility. They say these costs may have to be passed on to the customer. Long-distance buses, both state and private, have been operating from KCBT after Prime Minister MK Stalin inaugurated the terminus in December 2023. However, due to lack of space for idle parking of private buses, the government announced the construction of a facility at Mudichur, about 7 km from KCBT, at a cost of Rs 28 crore. “It will be built on five hectares and will accommodate 300 buses. It will have a restaurant, dormitories and toilets for the bus staff. Almost 80% of the work is done and we will open it at the end of June. This will streamline the operation of private buses,” said a CMDA official. Meanwhile, private operators say the new facility is just a blink of an eye. Mohammed Afzal, president of the Tamil Nadu Omnibus Owners Association, said all private buses leaving Chennai are forcibly sent to KCBT even if there are no waiting passengers and are charged 150 on exit. to guarantee this. If the parking lot opens in Mudichur, we will also have to pay parking charges there. After paying all this, we are blamed for overcharging the passengers,” he said. Operators said traffic congestion outside KCBT has become common. “There is a need for a ramp where buses can enter and exit the KCBT. Vehicles line up as the buses leave the site. Fearing congestion, many private buses drop passengers opposite the terminus and leave. Passengers are forced to walk on the GST Road to board MTC buses to their destinations,” said an operator.
