SALISBURY – A man has been arrested after officers say he was driving more than 150 miles per hour in an attempt to flee a traffic stop on Interstate 85.

The incident began Monday around 10:18 p.m. when an officer noticed a dark-colored Ford Mustang traveling more than 100 mph around the Julian Road exit, said Capt. Mark McDaniel, public information officer for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. The deputy then reportedly caught up with the Mustang and turned on its lights and siren in an attempt to stop it. The driver did not stop but instead accelerated to more than 150 miles per hour in an attempt to flee from the deputy, McDaniel said.

The deputy chased the Mustang south along the highway until it ended up on Webb Road, where it pulled into a parking lot in the 300 block of Webb Road, McDaniel said.

The driver of the Mustang, identified as 21-year-old John Cameron Curry, was arrested and charged with hit and run and aggressive driving. According to reports from the sheriff’s office, Curry was arrested at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.

Curry was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center and given a $20,000 bond.
