Big crowds expected for Free Comic Book Day in Windsor

By Vaseline May31,2024

It’s the first Saturday in May, which means it’s Free Comic Book Bay – when comic book publishers strut their wares and make them available for free to comic book enthusiasts.

And this year, Free Comic Book Day coincides with another notable day: May 4, aka Star Wars Day.

The owner of Rogues Gallery Comics in downtown Windsor said they are hosting a free comic book weekend on Saturday and Sunday instead of one day to accommodate the large crowds expected at the store.

Shawn Cousineau said there are 40 to 50 “brand new” comic books in the store, plus some from previous years.

“We limit it to three per customer and other stores have different limits, but we think three is pretty fair and if you want an extra it will cost a dollar to charity,” Cousineau told CBC News.

Rogues Gallery Comics has partnered with Paper Heroes and Cartoon Kingdom for the event since around 2019, and everyone who visits the stores is entered into a raffle for a prize by scanning a QR code.

“Because it’s May 4 this year and it’s a big Star Wars day this year, we’re calling them bounties,” he said.

Cousineau said there are also “additional incentives” at the downtown art gallery, museum and Windsor Public Library, all of which host events.

Additionally, he said Torus Donuts will have a specialty donut that day, “and our newest member is Yay for Strays (Cat Cafe), and they are super sweet. Anyone who goes in for the bounty will get a free drink and half off coupon hour for visits with the cats, which is excellent.”

Elias Pacheco says he has been going to Rogues Gallery Comics for almost a decade and has been volunteering there on Free Comic Book Day for a while.

“It’s been a lot of fun. You meet a lot of great people, you see a lot of great comics come in, and it’s always fun to see a little kid come and read comics and pick up a comic and be like, ” Oh, it’s Transformers’ and ‘that’s it’ Spider-Man,'” he said.
