The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, has absolved the government of the responsibility of creating jobs for the youth.

According to the Member of Parliament for Bekwai, it is the government’s job to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive and employ the country’s teeming youth.

In an exclusive interview on GH Today on GHOne TV, Osei-Owusu described the expectation that government would create jobs as archaic.

“Look at our constitution and our structure: the time when the government took responsibility for job creation is long gone. Now the government’s position is that I will create the environment for you so that you can create the jobs for yourselves, so we have to stop putting responsibility where it is not. We often give people the feeling that it is the government’s duty to do this, so people don’t do the things they can do themselves.”

He added: “I am leaving politics, I want to retire quietly and that is why I will now speak boldly about things that matter. If we want to make progress, people must take responsibility for their lives.”
