How does Tom Cruise train Glen Powell to become a movie star?

By Vaseline May31,2024

Glen Powell is Hollywood’s beacon of hope, shrouded in a devastating fog of uncertainty. We’ve talked about the lack of movie stars working today, but Powell is the exception to the rule.

He’s been acting since he was a kid, but it seems like he’s reached the stratosphere after his scene-stealing role in Top Gun: Maverick and breakthrough romantic comedy, Everyone but you.

Powell may be the last movie star we ever have, now that streaming is taking over and fewer faces break through the noise.

In a recent interview with GQ, Powell put all his film fandom on display, nerding out about different sets, talking about a bingo card with roles he wanted, and describing what it’s like to finally be in the spotlight after decades of missed opportunities and different roles.

Powell clearly loves cinema, which I think is the most important quality of any movie star.

He says, “The thing I always enjoy about making a movie is that you never know which movie will survive the test of time,” Powell says. “Or when something small, like a bust, will be held with reverence. You could make a movie and no one would care about anything in the movie. And then you make something and they hold it with reverence, you know?

In the same GQ interview, Powell also talked about how Tom Cruise essentially taught him how to be a movie star.

He played pranks on Powell during the filming of Top Gum, but he also took the time to put Powell through film school training.

Cruise surprised Powell by sending him to a movie theater in LA to watch a six-hour movie. Powell, who was expecting a group viewing, found himself alone. In the film, Cruise discussed his filmmaking knowledge and experiences directly with the camera. Cruise has stated that this film is exclusive to his friends and will not be released publicly.

Powell said: “(Cruise) says, ‘Do we all agree that this is what a camera is? This is the difference between a film camera and a digital camera…’” Powell continued, “The funniest part is about flying. It was as if he had put this entire flying school together. So he literally said, ‘Okay, this is what an airplane is. Here’s how things fly. Here’s how air pressure works. ”

Honestly, that sounds like such an amazing experience and the kind of surreal things only movie stars can do in their lives.

So what’s it like having Tom Cruise as a mentor? Powell explained, “The one thing I think we’re kindred spirits in is he’s obsessed with movies. That was our love language on set. I got to watch a man who knew every department. He was able to communicate clearly with everyone and be so kind and respectful and convey that vision.”

It sounds like he’s in good hands moving forward.

Powell has the movie Hitman, which can now be seen in theaters and on Netflix on June 7. It is directed by Richard Linklater and co-written by Powell. And Twistersthe sequel to the popular 90s hit, will be released in July.

If Hollywood wants to stay Hollywood, we need movie stars. And we’re in a good spot if we can get one like Glen Powell.
