Azerbaijan plans to move nearly 21,000 former displaced persons to the liberated areas by the end of 2024, Elchin Amirbayov, the representative of the President of Azerbaijan for special assignments, said on Friday.

He made these comments at the Third International Conference on “Mitigating Environmental Impact of Landmines: Resource Mobilization for Safe and Green Future” in Baku.

Amirbayov noted that the Azerbaijani state is intensively clearing mines to enable former displaced persons to return their native lands.

“The return of nearly 800,000 formerly displaced persons to their homes is planned. 21,000 of them will be able to do this by the end of this year. There are plans to rebuild or rehabilitate more than 100 residential settlements, including 9 towns, in the coming years,” he said.

The top official pointed out that the Azerbaijani government has invested more than $7 billion in reconstruction and rehabilitation activities in the country’s liberated areas since 2021.
