Vodka-guzzling danger driver jailed again as grandma dies six years after horror strike

By Vaseline May31,2024

A speeding driver who had been drinking for three days when he mounted a sidewalk and crashed into a mother has been jailed for a second time.

Lewis Heslop, 33, was sentenced to four years in prison for causing serious injury by dangerous driving in 2016. He never passed a driving test and was disqualified from driving at the time of the accident.

He left Monica Lewandowska with severe brain damage. The grandmother and mother of two daughters was standing on the sidewalk of a quiet residential street when Heslop came around a corner at high speed and lost control of the vehicle.

Ms Lewandowska, who was 41 at the time, was punched in the air and thrown onto the bonnet of the car before hitting her head on the windscreen. She was awake for a moment before losing consciousness in the ambulance on the way to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

Mrs. Lewandowska never regained consciousness, although she continued to breathe. She required 24-hour care and started having seizures. She is a Polish national and had moved to Britain in 2013.

She was taken to hospital from her care home in 2022 and died at Sunderland Royal Hospital on June 22 – aged just 47. The CPS then asked the Attorney General for permission to prosecute Heslop for causing death by dangerous driving.

The silver Hyundai Coupe left Easson Road in Darlington, turned and collided with the victim

On Friday, Heslop stood in the dock at Teesside Crown Court as Monica Lewandowska’s mother and daughter watched via video link from their home in Poland. Ms Lewandowska had just signed a lease to rent a house and was walking along Easson Road in Darlington at 4.45pm on Monday 13 June 2016.

She stopped walking to look at her cell phone when Heslop came around the corner at about 40 miles per hour. He was driving a friend’s Hyundai Coupe after three days of drinking. The court heard that Heslop had had an argument with his girlfriend at the time and was staying with friend Paul Midgley.
