Manchester United’s FA Cup trophy lift spoke volumes about the players’ view of Erik ten Hag

After a first kiss with the trophy, Bruno Fernandes turned to the left and sent the FA Cup over the line.

It appeared that the Manchester United captain handed the trophy to Diogo Dalot, who was standing directly next to him, to lift it up before passing it to the next person and so on. Instead, Fernandes instructed him to go all the way to the end of the line.

At the end stood Erik ten Hag, who received the trophy from Willy Kambwala and Andre Onana, who stood to the right of Ten Hag. When it reached Kambwala, Jonny Evans pointed to the United boss and ensured he would be the next to lift the trophy.

Ten Hag, who was staring into Onana’s face, was apparently moved by the gesture and smiled hugely. Once he had a firm grip on the handles and base, he followed Fernandes’ example, kissed it and raised it into the air. It was his second experience of hoisting a piece of silverware onto the Wembley balcony.

The biggest question now is: will this be his last? INEOS are yet to make a decision on the Dutchman’s future, meaning it remains to be seen whether he will lead United to a third term next season or not.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, making his way through the mixed zone on his way to United’s dressing room, refused to answer a question asked about Ten Hag’s future. An article in the national newspaper claimed on Friday that Ratcliffe had already made up his mind.
