Tim Cone praises Ginebra’s character and resilience as they approach the PBA Finals

It’s not just the fact that Ginebra is on the verge of reaching the PBA Season 48 Philippine Cup Finals that makes Coach Tim Cone proud.

It’s how his wards have once again shown character and belief after finding themselves in a tough situation in their best-of-7 semi-final against rivals Meralco.

“That’s what I’m most proud of: our guys’ ability to fight through all the adversity and find a way to win”, said the 25-time champion mentor.

Cone said this moments after their 89-84 Game 5 victory on Sunday night at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, where they came back from as deep as 15 in the third quarter in another classic NSD show from the barangay.

More importantly, they have now taken the 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 affair, leaving the Kings beaming with pride after things looked bleak.

The crowd favorites trailed 1-2 in the series after that 87-80 loss in Game 3 in Cavite, and Cone revealed that it affected his team’s morale.

“Our Game 3 was just terrible,” he said, as the aforementioned loss was their second in a row after winning the series opener, 92-88. “We were back the next day and just looked at each other and we were all very down.

But everyone on the team knew it was all up to them to overcome that negativity, especially leading up to the crucial Game 4 last Friday.

“We talked about it,” Kegel said. “We were talking about the negativity at that moment, and how we have to turn that around and go into the next game with a positive attitude.”

They did exactly that. With a revamped front five led by LA Tenorio and Stanley Pringle, Ginebra got off to a fast start, scoring the 90-71 rout.

The victory in the crucial Game 5, where they made a spirited comeback led by Christian Standhardinger, who finished with 34 points and nine rebounds.2024-PBA-Philippine-Cup-Semis-Finals-Game-5-Ginebra-def-Meralco-Tim-Cone-scaled Tim Cone praises Ginebra's character and resilience as they approach the PBA Finals Basketball News PBA - Philippine Sports News

“Luckily we got out to an early lead in Game Four and that really encouraged us,” Cone said of that game-tying victory.

“I come out here in Game Five, trailing by 15 points and fighting back twice. We came back pretty much at the end of the half and had to come back again at the end of the third quarter. So we fought and fought.”

Now they’re just one win away from their third Finals appearance in the past four conferences and that’s a big thanks to the fight they have in them.

“That is very character building as a team. That’s basically playoff basketball. That’s the only way to win in the play-offs.” Kegel said.

‘Unless you’re San Miguel,he added jokingly, causing those in the press room to chuckle.

“San Miguel just keeps walking and hitting everyone.”
