The RCMP have confirmed two people are dead after a plane crash near Squamish Friday.

“On May 25, 2024, police were able to gain aerial access to the remote area south of Squamish on the west side of Howe Sound. Once on scene, it was confirmed that the two occupants of the aircraft unfortunately did not survive,” said Sgt. Vanessa Munn Sunday.

Mounties had said Saturday they received an automatic crash notification from a smartphone after a crash occurred Friday evening.

According to the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC), the location was approximately 20 nautical miles north of Vancouver. It said a call was made just before 6.30pm to search Mount Ellesmere and surrounding areas for the aircraft.

The RCMP say they are working with the Transportation Safety Board and the BC Coroners Service to investigate the incident. It says Squamish Search and Rescue, Blackcombe Helicopters and several members of the public assisted in locating the aircraft.

Police say no further details are being released at this time.
