WEST FARGO, ND (KVRR) – Students from across the West Fargo Public School District walked onto the stage at Scheels Arena here for their graduation, but for Horace High School it was also a celebration of their first graduating class.

For the past four years, students in the class of 2024 have entered the school without upperclassmen.

“We’re kind of known as the ‘guinea pigs’ in Horace terms because we’re the first class to go through it, but it’s good. Learned a lot, made a lot of changes.”

Almanaseer said the students worked together to build their own culture at Horace.

“I think for us we’ve really built a community, a family, and I think that’s something that sets us apart from other schools.”

English teacher Nathan Amberg has mentored these students all four years at Horace High.

He said although these students had challenges without older students in front of them to emulate and learn from their mistakes, they rose to the challenge.

“There had to be a lot of grace because none of their older children were above them. But at the same time, we had to regularly give examples like: “Okay friends, we need to talk about this, we need to stop it now, because this is not okay.” And they did. They rose to the challenge and it was exciting to see.”

While it hasn’t all been smooth sailing, he says these students have left a lasting impact on the school.

“Last week I got to listen to speeches from seniors, and I had juniors introduce seniors at a banquet we were at. And it was incredible what the seniors mean to the juniors. And I think a lot of that is due to the fact that in many ways they got through this together. ”

As for Almanaseer, he says the experiences he had at Horace High School will stay with him.

“My friends, no matter what I’ve done, they’ve been there for me. We have a lot to do, it was great. Friends, teachers, community, that’s what Horace is a family. So I would say it’s the family on the road.
