By Vaseline May27,2024

Naomi Osaka is eager to go head-to-head at the French Open, ready to embrace the challenge and make it a showdown to remember. Despite her usual tendency to avoid the main draw situation, she recently made an effort to stay on top of the French Open draw. She had no idea she would be paired against Iga Swiatek, and the whole news came to her in a situation where “Everyone became quiet.”

After securing a first-round win against Lucia Bronzetti, the 26-year-old opened up about how she was messing around with her team about a match against the world number one during a post-match press conference recently. However, her joke came true and she became a laughing stock for her entire team.

She stated: “The other day during that question, and I guess, you know, what might it look like now and what are your thoughts looking ahead to that? To be honest, I really didn’t know, but then I thought, why does everyone keep asking me about this trek?

The former world number one then admitted in all seriousness that she had not thought about the Polish tennis star. She further added: “Then I knew I was in the top half, so I was joking. I thought, it’s not like I’m playing Iga, and then everyone went quiet. So I thought, oh, um, but yeah.

The two players’ head-to-head record is now 1-1. In their most recent meeting, which took place in the 2022 Miami Open final, Swiatek emerged victorious. However, the Japanese tennis player had the upper hand in their previous encounter in the last 16 round of Toronto in 2019.

On the other hand, she hasn’t met the 22-year-old tennis player since her comeback, and she’s quite optimistic about the chance to play against her. Additionally, she even shared her excitement to take on such a competitive match, highlighting how she watched Swiatek during her pregnancy.

In the same conversation, the 26-year-old tennis star expressed her excitement at the prospect of meeting three-time tournament winner Swiatek. She stated: “I’m honestly very excited. I watched her a lot when I was pregnant. Honestly, I think it’s an honor to play her at the French Open because she’s won here more than once. It is a very big honor and challenge for me.”

On the other hand, Osaka, who has made it clear that she wants to become a top player again, sees a possible match with Swiatek as a great way to test her skills against a tough opponent at Grand Slam level. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how the four-time Grand Slam champions go head-to-head, provide some tough competition and take advantage of that opportunity to advance in the French Open run.
