‘Unique’ manager now the favorite for Chelsea job, he meets the standards the club is looking for

By Vaseline May27,2024

Chelsea’s search for a new manager could be nearing an end.

Mauricio Pochettino left Chelsea last week, leaving the club to bring in someone to take charge of the dugout at Stamford Bridge.

Several names have been linked with the vacancy, including Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna, Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca, Brentford’s Thomas Frank and Roberto De Zerbi, formerly of Brighton & Hove Albion.

Whoever takes over from Pochettino will have to play in the Europa Conference League instead of the Europa League next season.

Chelsea lost their place in European football’s second tier after beating Manchester United in the FA Cup final last weekend.

The favorite for the job at Chelsea

So far, there hasn’t been much talk about Chelsea having a leading candidate for the vacancy at Stamford Bridge.

None of the names mentioned above seemed to be in the lead, or at least not by any great distance.

However, that now seems to have changed.

According to the Daily Mail, a club insider has described De Zerbi as the “favourite” for the job as he meets the criteria Chelsea are looking for.

Roberto De Zerbi’s tactics

It’s not hard to see why Chelsea are currently considering De Zerbi.

The Italian has clearly succeeded in the Premier League after his time at Brighton and his style of football is probably what the club’s owners want to see. Pep Guardiola has described both him and his team as ‘unique’ in the past.

The Zerbi, who mainly used a 4-2-3-1 formation this season, plays a very attacking and possession-oriented football style.

According to WhoScored, Brighton had the fifth highest average for shots per game in the Premier League this season (14.8) and the fourth highest possession (60.2%).

It’s what you’d expect from one of the country’s top sides, so De Zerbi could be the perfect manager for a club like Chelsea. Of all the names currently linked to the job, the 44-year-old should be at the top of their list.
