Director wants to provide wild surprises in comedy horror ‘Handsome Guys’

SEOUL, May 27 (Yonhap) — “Handsome Guys” is essentially a comedy film, but incorporates elements from different genres, such as mystery and horror, to enrich the story, the film’s director said Monday.

“We had a lot of trouble with the scenes where evil spirits appear. It was a challenge to find the right balance – not too heavy, but also not too light,” director Nam Dong-hyub said at a press event to promote the upcoming film . movie monday.

The film has a Hollywood-style occult theme, aiming to reflect the tone of American comedy films of the 1980s and 1990s, he added.

“We did our best to find the right tone to match our film. We rehearsed a lot. I think in the end we were able to blend the genres with enough balance.”

The comedy horror revolves around two men, Jae-phil and Sang-gu, who move into a new house in a rural town. The two men, who consider themselves handsome and handsome, immediately attract the attention – and suspicion – of both the villagers and two police officers.

On the day of their move, a chance event causes the awakening of a powerful spirit locked in the basement, setting off a series of unpredictable incidents. While Jae-phil and Sang-gu do nothing, visitors to their home mysteriously die shortly after arriving.

Since the house plays a central role in the film’s story, the director said the production team put a lot of effort into its design to show its transformation throughout the film.

“The story takes place in the house, which turns out to be much more dangerous than initially expected. It is very old and harbors a big secret,” Nam said.

Actor Lee Sung-min, who played Jae-phil, took on the role to make another change in his career. A seasoned actor, he recently rose to fame for his performance in the political film ‘12.12: The Day’ and the tvN series ‘Reborn Rich’, among others.

“The character felt very refreshing, and I saw it as a new challenge for me as an actor. I appreciated the mix of different genres in the film, which is a trend in many films these days,” said Lee.

Lee Hee-joon, known for the Korean original Netflix series ‘A Killer Paradox’, expressed his interest in the wild unpredictability of the scenario.

“I had a hunger for comedy, and at the same time the screenplay was so intriguing. I especially liked that the story unfolded in such an unpredictable way,” he said.

Despite looking outwardly tough, his character is actually “very innocent and sentimental, and prone to tears,” the actor explained. “He wishes everyone to live together peacefully.”

“I want to invite the audience to prepare for a nice laugh,” he said.

The film is produced by Hive Media Corp., known for hit films such as the crime action “Inside Men” (2015) and the historical drama “12.12: The Day” (2023).

“Handsome Guys” releases June 26.
