– Drilling has begun at Fnix, the largest natural gas field under development off the coast of Argentina
– Project well on track for first gas at the end of 2024
– Fnix will contribute significant natural gas volumes to Argentina’s energy supply for more than 15 years

Wintershall Dea and its partners Total Austral, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies in Argentina (operator), and Pan American Energy have commenced development drilling at the Fnix field, approximately 60 kilometers offshore Tierra del Fuego.

Noble’s jack-up drilling rig Regina Allen has been deployed to start the Fnix development drilling program. The installation is temporarily located next to the new Fnix production platform, which will be installed at the beginning of this year. Three development wells are planned to be drilled, completed and brought into production in the coming months. Production will then be evacuated via a 24-inch subsea multi-phase line to the existing Vega Plyade platform 35 kilometers away from Fnix, and from there to the Rio Cullen shore facilities.

Following the successful installation of the production platform in February and extensive and detailed preparation work for the drilling campaign in recent months, we are excited to start the next phase in the development of Fnix. We are well on track to bring this important energy project into production in the fourth quarter of this year, the company said Manfred Boeckmann, general manager of Wintershall Dea Argentina. The team looks forward to a successful drilling campaign, he added.

Fnix is the largest natural gas field currently being developed off the Argentine coast. Fnix represents a key pillar for growing domestic gas production, with natural gas volumes expected to contribute to Argentina’s long-term energy supply for more than 15 years. The gas field is expected to play an important role in the country’s energy matrix and offset imports, with a planned peak production of around 10 million cubic meters of gas per day. The consortium’s total investment in the Fnix development is approximately US$700 million.

Fnix is the next gas field to be commissioned as part of the world’s southernmost gas production concession CMA-1, in which Wintershall Dea and Total Austral (operator) each have a 37.5 percent share, with Pan American Energy holding the remaining 25 owns percent. . Currently, the four main gas fields Caadn Alfa, Aries, Carina and Vega Plyade in CMA-1 already produce and supply 15 percent of Argentina’s natural gas production.

Wintershall Dea has been active in Argentina for 45 years. Today the company has interests in onshore and offshore fields in Neuqun and Tierra del Fuego, contributing significantly to Argentina’s energy supply. With a total production of approximately 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, Wintershall Dea is one of Argentina’s most important gas producers.
