“There’s a reason I always use supermarket shampoo.”

By Vaseline May27,2024

Recently, Mommy‘S Beauty editor Erin interviewed a trichologist (a type of hair and scalp doctor) to ask the age-old question: Is salon shampoo better for our hair than supermarket shampoo? And I’ve never clicked a link so quickly in my life.

For twenty years – as long as I’ve been a beauty journalist – I’ve been a big believer in supermarket shampoo and conditioner (also known as affordable shampoo and conditioner).

Look: There are five ways to step up your hair game. Post continues below.

I believe it’s impossible to lump entire retailers, or price ranges, into a black and white category of “good” and “bad.” We often get the feeling that salon products are expensive because they are better, and supermarket products are bad because they are cheap.

This theory is rarely true for anything else, so why would it be true for hair care? Sure, ‘you get what you pay for’ applies in situations like used cars and fancy hotel rooms, but fashion and beauty are different.

Listen: Speaking of hair products, check out the shine that instantly delivers silky locks. Post continues below.

You can pay $300 for a designer knit that will ball and pill after a few wears, but a $50 one from Uniqlo will still look new a year later.

Skin care is also a good example. There are incredible serums and moisturizers available that definitely fall into the ‘Savey’ category – it all comes down to formulation and distribution – if a brand makes large quantities of a product, it can be made at a much more affordable price.

Each brand will differ regardless of price point. There are so many factors at play, so I never judge a book by its cover. Or in this case a shampoo according to the recommended retail price.
