How to Find Relief from OCD

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic disorder that causes a person to have uncontrolled recurring behaviours and thoughts where one feels the need to follow things through to completion. This can often involve repeating something someone else did because it was not done the way you wanted it done.

Some people with OCD have various avoidance issues, like avoiding germs, dirt, dust, and so on. Some people have excessive compulsions they simply cannot stop, like arranging and rearranging items, detailed cleaning processes, and so on.

For people with OCD, their disorder can become part of their daily routines. They can spend hours just obsessing over their behaviours to attempt to relieve stress by following something through to completion. Once completed, they may not experience any joy or satisfaction from the completion.

OCD can make it impossible to get relief from obsessive thoughts, addictive tendencies, and doing the same things over and over to ensure it is completed how you want it. Fortunately, there are different types of counselling therapies in Toronto that can be used to help you start to let go of obsessive tendencies.

Exposure and Ritual Prevention Therapy

This type of therapy helps someone with OCD to not feel like they have to complete an obsessive-compulsive action. The objective here is to help the person learn how to resist the urge to complete the action through practicing repetition of resistance and gaining a better understanding that while one can honour their thoughts, they do not have to complete it.

With ritual prevention, the person talks through the processes that they would normally do if they acted upon exposure. Ritual prevents therapy is a form of talk therapy that helps the person confront the exposure and their thought processes without completing it. As they talk through various rituals, they start to realize that there are no serious consequences for not completing it.

Cognitive Therapy

This form of therapy helps the person with OCD start to recognize their thought patterns that trigger their obsessive-compulsive behaviours. There are several steps of cognitive therapy counselling that someone will progress through including developing awareness, review and analysis, and experiments to contradict the obsessive-compulsive behaviours.

Part of cognitive therapy can include keeping a journal of your obsessive-compulsive thoughts and behaviours. During counselling sessions, you and your counsellor use the journal entries to help you address your OCD in a safe and supportive environment.
