Porn Addiction: Questions You Are Afraid or Uncomfortable Asking

Porn Addiction: Questions You Are Afraid or Uncomfortable Asking

The number of adults, both male and female, who are developing porn addictions has increased in recent years. Part of the reason for the increase is due to the prevalence and ease of access to pornographic content via the Internet.

In the past, people were limited to DVDs, magazines or being tethered by their computers to online content. Today, porn can be consumed through our smartphones and other mobile devices. In addition, there are social media sites and apps that make accessing content possible from just about anywhere.

What is the definition of porn addiction?

This type of addiction is generally defined as a compulsion to view and consume pornographic materials and content in gradually increasing volumes. It is considered a behavioural addiction because the addict’s behaviour changes as their addiction to porn increases.

How prevalent is porn consumption?

According to the American Psychological Association, 50% to 99% of men and 30% to 86% around the world consume pornographic materials and content1. However, these figures do not mean they have an addiction, but demonstrate the volume of porn being consumed.

What are some signs and symptoms of porn addiction?

Many of the signs and symptoms of porn addiction are similar to drug and alcohol addictions, including:

  • The inability to stop, even though the person has tried.
  • Hiding porn viewing and consumption from loved ones.
  • Spending large amounts of time consuming porn.
  • Making porn consumption a priority over other tasks.
  • Experiencing an overwhelming desire to view porn.
  • Responding in a defensive, angry, or hostile manner when asked about porn usage or being asked to stop.
  • Having to consume larger amounts of porn in order to achieve the same effects.
  • Being stimulated by pornographic content and material that previously was of no interest or that was morally objectionable.

What causes a person to become addicted to porn?

There can be several underlying factors that can lead to a porn addiction. Sometimes, porn is being used as a substitute in place of drugs or alcohol. In other cases, there can be a family history of addiction that places the individual at a higher risk of developing an addiction of some kind.

As with other addictions, consuming porn triggers a response in the brain. It provides the release of certain chemicals that can make the individual feel relaxed and less anxious, stressed, or depressed. In addition, porn addicts are not consuming content for sexual stimulation or release.

In many cases a porn addict will go for hours, days, or even weeks in between orgasms to maintain their “porn high.” After reaching climax, it is similar to coming down off a drug or sobering up after drinking and forces the individual to face the real world once more.

What Our Clients Say

Marc (August 2013, 5 stars)

I’ve been seeing Ellen since 2009 and the experience has been incredibly valuable. I first came to her because I had a lot of doubts about a relationship in. She helped me through a big break up and the rebound afterwards. We even maintained our sessions for a number of years afterwards. Because of her I’m much more in tune with my emotions and needs. I highly recommend her services for anyway with relationship and intimacy difficulties
